A Practical Review of the Diagnosis and Treatment of GERD

A Message from the GERD Education Alliance Faculty

To our readers:

This monograph represents the first of a series of initiatives stemming from the GERD Education Alliance, which convened its first planning meeting in May 2006. The

Alliance comes together to provide educational tools and resources for primary care NPs and PAs in order to assist in the care and management of patients with GERD. The ultimate objective of the Alliance is to improve patient outcomes and quality of life in this prevalent and increasingly common disorder.

In addition to this monograph, comprising a brief overview of GERD, the GERD Education Alliance will develop two additional monographs. They will consist of case studies and a patient and provider “toolkit” to aid in the proper evaluation, management, and communication to patients with GERD.

Recognizing that patient care is not just about pharmacologic management, the educational interventions under development by the Alliance will also address ways to help patients establish effective lifestyle changes and enhance compliance with

treatment therapies. Initiatives range from a symposium at the 2006 AANP meeting; peer-to-peer sessions in association with smaller medical meetings; podcasts, a

web-based component (www.gerdstoptheburn.com); and a PDA learning module on GERD.

We hope that this publication and the other components developed by the GERD Education Alliance will help to equip each NP and PA to answer the following questions as they render care for patients with GERD:

  • What signs should I be on the lookout for?
  • How do I rule out other diseases?
  • What appropriate therapies (pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic) exist?
  • What side effects do I look for? What side effects should I make my patients aware of?
  • How do I monitor my patients who are diagnosed with GERD?
  • How do I maintain follow-up with my patients diagnosed with GERD?
  • What patient education do I need to provide?
  • When do I refer my patients to gastroenterology?
